Character Name: Daniel Faraday
Series: Lost
Gender: Male
Age: 39
Species: Human
Sexuality: Heterosexual
Appearance: Daniel looks rather similar to a typical nerd; he’s tall and slightly gaunt, and his skin is so light that you wonder if he had never been in the sun at all back on the island. His ruffled long brown hair probably has never seen a comb in a long time. (However, he has cut it since the 90s; at that time, it was so long that it reached his shoulders.) He also sports a small clean-shaven brown mustache and beard which add to his “professor” appearance. He has rather large ears and small brown eyes, which are often narrowed in confusion or worry. In Oxford, he wore a loose-fitting white lab coat, but has since changed into more of a “business casual” style. On the island he wore a black vest, a light blue collared long-sleeved shirt, a black tie, and black slacks. He also wears a wristwatch. Occasionally he tucks the shirt in or lets it hang out, and rolls up the sleeves of his shirt when it gets too hot. Over time, he disposed of the black vest, but still wears the tie for some unknown reason that has yet to be explained. (It is joked that the tie is responsible for keeping his head on his body.)
Personality: Daniel seems very awkward and rather “out of it” at first, but further insights into his character reveal a person fascinated with the scientific world. Although he is not the most eloquent of scientists, he is patient and will try his best to explain his solution to the problem. He is never really surprised by what could be considered paranormal phenomenon, since he used to work on space-time paradoxes when he was a physics professor at Oxford. He dislikes violence, and tries his best to not get on anyone’s bad side. All he really wants is to help others, despite what he is ordered to do.
Unfortunately, his love of science makes it hard for him to communicate effectively with other people: as the pilot Frank Lapidus said, “Half the stuff he says goes over my head; the other half goes way over my head.” This is why the people who Daniel gets along with the best are the members of the team of scientists who came with him to the island. He especially feels for Charlotte Lewis, even proclaiming his love for her when a hostile Other asks him why he shouldn’t kill the team right then and there. One of his greatest fears was for Charlotte to get hurt; sadly, he was unable to save her when she experienced a hemorrhage. After her death, he became more erratic than usual, and even started to become detached from the people around him.
Another fear which greatly influences him is the fear of falling victim to the condition known as “temporal displacement”. His journal, one of the most important things he has, lists all that he has learned in case that happens, even containing his statement that “If anything goes wrong, Desmond Hume will be my constant.” However, even with the journal, he seems to suffer from memory loss, as seen when he was playing a memory game with Charlotte; when she turned three cards down and asked him to tell her what each of them was, he could only remember two of them, and felt he “was making no progress.”
The only thing that Daniel probably wants is to spend the rest of his life with Charlotte; however, when she dies, this dream is shattered. From that point on, Daniel is a broken man.
Abilities: (For superhuman powers/strength/abilities, describe how they will be limited) No superpowers whatsoever. The only abilities he has is calculating physics equations in his head and using his intuitive mind to come up with a quick plan. He has some medical knowledge that he uses when possible.
Weaknesses: He is useless at using weaponry, and has no skills he can use in battle. He can be very absentminded at times, and gets very flustered if an experiment doesn’t go right. He is also not the best at social conversations, and has a hard time explaining his random thoughts and theories if asked about them. He also seems to suffer from memory loss, much to his regret.
Manhattanite or outsider? outsider
History: Daniel Faraday worked as a physics professor in Oxford in the 90’s, conducting experiments on the subject of time, a topic which he became very interested in. He built a machine which could transport a rat’s consciousness to the future, and he proved this by having the rat complete a maze which it wasn’t supposed to have learned until one hour later. The only problem? The rat died, as its brain began to go between past and future.
He helped Desmond Hume, however, when Desmond's consciousness began to experience time shifts. By telling Desmond of a "constant"- a person that was present in both his past and future- Daniel saved Desmond's life when Desmond realized his constant was Penny, a girl he loved. It was shown later that Daniel believed that Desmond would be his constant, showing that he was afraid to have the same thing happen to him as well.
There is little known about what happened in an experiment he did with a girl named Theresa- the only outcome that we know of is that Theresa began to feel the same effects of the rat, and even though she did not die, she became bedridden. Daniel was kicked out of Oxford and went to Essex, Massachusetts and was cared by an unknown caretaker. During this time period, he saw the fake Oceanic airplane crash on TV (but only few know that it was actually fake) and started crying. When asked why, he simply replied, “I don’t know.”
Daniel was hired along with other scientists to examine the island’s strange properties as well as to catch Benjamin Linus, for reasons still left unsaid. When he was dropped on the island by a helicopter, he first acted like they were there to save the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815, but he was found out and confessed that saving the Losties was not the team’s main purpose. He was shown to have feelings for one of his team members, an anthropologist named Charlotte Lewis.
Then, Benjamin moved the island by turning a large wheel underground, and it was Daniel who kept a clear head and explained to the survivors that the island had become “unstuck” in time, and it was impossible to know what time they would be in next. He compared it to a record skipping- “although we’re not on the track we want to be on”, he said.
The time shifts, which were followed by bright white flashes, soon began to take their toll on some of the survivors- making their noses bleed. Daniel explained that if the flashes didn’t stop, their minds would crash, not knowing what time they were exactly in. He called this condition “temporal displacement”.
Charlotte, unfortunately, experienced the worst of these side effects, having a hemorrhage that eventually killed her. Daniel, who had confessed his love to her, sat by her side until her death. It was after another time flash that Daniel appears in Manhattan.
